Summary

The Walruses are being pushed off the Arctic sea. The sea ice is too low for them. This is the third time in four years that the Walruses are in the land. They are supposed to be in the Chukchi sea where they usually are. The National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado says that since the seasonal sea ice melt began, this year is the third lowest Arctic sea ice and this is making the trend go on for ice free summer. The record shows that the warmest years are 1998 and 2010. Many marine mammals are being affected. US Geological Survey reported that many Walruses, up to 20,000, are on Point Lay, Alaska and they are having hard time finding food. The Wildlife experts said that when the Walruses are scared, they might start a stampede that could kill the young Walruses. Bruce Woods from the US Fish and Wildlife regional office in Alaska said, "Our biggest concern right now is stampeding. That's the big risk posed to these animals." Adult female weighs a ton and the worries there, again, are the youngs. A year before, 131 Walruses were crushed by a stampede where the Walruses were retreating from the ice. Most of them were young Walruses. To evade the danger of a stampede, a buffer zone was made so the ships and the planes would be a half of mile away from there. The FWS is considering to protect the Walreses under the Endangered Species Act. They will decide by January 2011.

Opinion/Reflection

I think that it is horrible that there is a huge human impact on the Walruses. I wish I can help them because it is our fault that they are losing their home. How would you feel if someone destroyed your home? I would feel terrible. Where will the Walruses go if Alaska melts down? Probably to land or they will be endangered or will get extinct. Not many people remembered about the mammals in the Arctic because of the big news over the oil spill. I believe that the marine mammals need more attention than now to get the Global Warming under control. Hopefully, the Walruses would be able to go under the Endangered Species Act.

Questions

1) What can we do to save and protect the Walruses?

2) Would the Walruses adapt to Alaska well or would they not adapt?

3) How come not a lot of people know about this news?

4) Who will be affected by the Walruses coming to Alaska?

5) What other species are having trouble with the ice melting in the Arctic?

  1. I am dissapointed that the walrus' habitats are being melted away and that they are being forced to move to a different habitat. Personally I believe that this should be another thing that really tells humans that we need to step up our game and really start to try to do better for our environment. The walruses are stampeding and this can cause damafe to many things.

People who are native to Alaska will be affected by the walruses migrating to Alaska. The walruses will take fish from many fishing grounds and shores and this will affect their food supply and other things. I blame humans for this but I believe that the Alaskans who aren't the cause of the melting shouldn't suffer.

  2. It's absolutely horrible that the walruses have lost their home. With the ice melting, they be forced to move more inland. They wouldn't last outside of their natrual habitat. And it's very difficult to adapt to a completely different biosphere. They have no food, it won't be as cold, and who knows who will prey on the walruses. So we need to list them as endangered species or do some action. The spotlight should be shown on the stories that need attention and not on the stories that happened four months ago.

    5) I'm sure that since walruses and polar bears are in the same region, they too are having trouble with the snow melting. They might have to compete with the walruses for food since the land is getting smaller and smaller so they are being pushed together in the same area. Any land animal in the Artic region would be having trouble too. The arctic fox, caribou, and many more animals will all have more and more problems if we don't do anything soon.

  3. I agree with James, it really stinks that these walruses are losing there home. I think they should really get this problem under control. These walruses don't deserve to have their home taken away. They need take some of their attention off the oil spill and focus a little more on the walruses. They need to get this under control so the walruses and other artic species don't go extinct.

    3. Not a lot of people know about the walruses because every one is focused on the oil spill. If they took some of their attention off the oil spill more people would know about this issue.

  4. From sea otters.. to walruses.
I'm afraid that if this continues there are hundreds of animals that are going to be in danger like these animals. It's tragic to know that it was OUR fault and our influences that made them become endangered species or rather become extinct. Shouldn't people be aware that if the animals are slowly dying, we will eventually destroy our own civilization? This needs to be in control and people should be aware of these environmental news. If any environmental news like this comes out again, I'm going to let others know about this.

    3) I think a lot of people don't know about this news because most people don't think that walruses dying wouldn't affect us humans in anyway. On the other hand, they think the oil spill as James mentioned is more well known because it can directly affect our living areas. However, people need to start caring about the animals and other organisms that are on our planet.
